The first edition of this work providing guidance to those involved in children's education on how to reduce prejudice and incidents of bigotry sought to comprehensively link psychological prejudice levels to stages of racial and ethnic identity development. For the new edition, Ponterotto (Fordham U.), Utsey (Virginia Commonwealth U.), and Pederson (emeritus, Syracuse U.) have retained that focus, but expanded coverage to take into account developments in research and theory on biracial, multiracial, and lesbian and gay identity development, bringing the relatively new construct of the multicultural personality into the discussion. They have also greatly expanded the examples of exercises and activities for increasing multiracial awareness and sensitivity into four chapters for elementary and middle schools, high schools, the college campus, and the wider community. Advice for parents has also been expanded, bringing the book's focus beyond the first edition's emphasis on the roles of teachers and counselors.
