This book offers a deeper understanding of the institutional policies and practices that are essential for creating campus environments that are inclusive, welcoming, and affirming. Building on the success of Multicultural Competencies in Student Affairs (2004), the book takes the conceptual frameworks of multicultural organizational development (MCOD) and the Multicultural Competencies Intervention Matrix (MCIM) from the individual level to the institutional level. While not designed to be a 'one-size fits all' or cookbook approach to creating a campus that fully embraces and enacts multicultural values and practices, it offers a conceptual framework on which multicultural change can occur at the micro (e.g, department) or the macro (e.g., institution) level. Specifically, it provides a model of multicultural change for higher education practitioners who work directly with students; it applies this model to individuals working at entry-, mid-, and senior-level positions at diverse types of institutions; and it presents case studies and specific examples of effective practice that will help practitioners apply the theory to their work. Going beyond the traditional student affairs readership, the book more broadly targets higher education professionals and departments that directly serve students, such as athletics, academic support and advising, first-year experience programs, etc whose work is essential to student success.
