This study moves beyond the earlier fixation on national identity in post-colonial literatures with a more global perspective on the genre of utopian fiction by British Commonwealth nation writers. While Pordzik (apparently a German scholar) differentiates between the classical utopian novels by such as H.G. Wells and Aldous Huxley and postmodern "heterotopias" not subscribing to the possibility of a perfect future, he views the boundary line as fuzzy. After taking into account criticism of Euro-American biases in deconstructionist readings in framing criteria for a comparative study, he explores changing patterns of future projection, cross- cultural and feminist issues, magical realism, and cultural-textual hybridization in such fiction as Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985) and Okri's Astonishing the Gods (1992).
