Focusing on cultural rather than political or military factors preceding the Canadian Confederation, Poulter (Canadian History, Arcadia U.) makes the case that appropriating indigenous cultural activities in organized sports such as lacrosse, snowshoeing, and tobogganing enabled British colonists in Canada to establish a distinct "native Canadian" identity. He traces Canadian sports history to the 1840 founding of the Montreal Snow Shoe Club rather than to the Montreal Hunt Club of 1807, as some sports historians do. Sports and media reporting on them represented the 19th century imperatives for self- and societal improvement. Sports clubs participated in celebrating Canada's 1885 military defeat of First Nations groups. Period illustrations enhance the volume. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
