Poulton (Utah and Western Art, U. of Utah's Museum of Fine Arts) and Swanson (director, Springville, Utah museum of Art) have compiled color and b&w depictions of Utah's Red Rock, Monument Valley, Zion National Park, and other regions of the state by artists from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The book is organized into three parts covering Red Rock paintings between 1848-1970, Utah's Plateau Parks and Monuments from 1900 onward, and contemporary traditional paintings and modern images. Groups of artists covered include: Thomas Moran and the great survey artists, Southern Utah Artists in the first half of the 20th century, and Maynard Dixon and the visiting artists. Works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Solomon Nunes Carvalho, and Max Ernst are also included. Essays offer a geological overview of Red Rock as well as analysis of artists' relationships to the region throughout distinct eras of exploration and aesthetics. Approximately 300 images are included. Oversize: 11x12.5". Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
