Pouly (security, reliability, and trust; U. of Luxembourg) and Kohlas (theoretical computer science, U. of Fribourg, Switzerland) describe logic algorithms that are general enough to be adapted to many different specific situations so that a new one does not have to be constructed each time. They begin by introducing the algebraic system of a valuation algebra and defining generic inference algorithms for their processing. Then they describe generic constructions and identify new valuation algebra instances. The final section presents selected applications of local computation. Among the topics are computing single queries, valuation algebras for path problems, and sparse matrix techniques. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
