The Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico, part of Bandelier National Monument, contains an extraordinary wealth of archaeological sites, according to Powers (of the National Park Service), yet relatively little archaeological research into its Puebloan inhabitants has been conducted there until recently. In this volume he presents the results of some of that research, primarily dealing with the Puebloans who lived on the plateau between 1150 and 1600 CE. Sixteen chapters tell the story of these people through explorations of the environment and climate, agricultural strategies, changing diets as population grew, settlement landscapes, religious and war symbolism in rock art, trail networks and their implications for community relations, and oral traditions of the Puebloans. Additional topics include a survey of early archaeology in the area, the transformation of the area into a US nuclear weapons research laboratory, and modern Keres and Tewa perspectives on their ancestral homeland.
