This is a reprint of the original 1991 edition providing the English translation of the World War II diaries of Matome Ugaki, an admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The entries progress chronologically from shortly before the attacks at Pearl Harbor in 1941 to the admiral's last entry before his own ill-fated kamikaze attack went down at sea on the day of the Japanese surrender in 1945. Useful editorial notes are included when needed to explain the narrative, and appendices include an afterword to Ugaki's last entry telling of his actions on his last day, as well as a career brief of the admiral and a list of names cited in the text.
