Punter (English, University of Bristol) identifies the apparent impossibility of recounting rapturous states and other forms of heightened awareness and fixing them in words or in time within cultural expectations, while questioning what we do inside ourselves when reading moments of rapture. Seeking to connect with the idea of addiction as an alternative to the moral law, he deals with notions of writing itself being a kind of 'seizure' in the works of authors including Blake, Burroughs, Nietzsche, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Genet, and Ballard. He concludes that the very possibility of communication and interpretation is radically open to doubt. Punter is research director of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bristol. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
