This guide gives ideas on using the parallel curriculum model (PCM) for social studies in grades 6-12. It offers four units, complete with reproducibles, on history, geography, sociology, and interdisciplinary studies: "Becoming a Geographer" (grade 6); "Through the Looking Glass," an interdisciplinary reading/writing/social studies unit for middle school students in intervention classes; "Subversion and Controversy: Sociological Considerations of Humor," for students in grade 7 and 8; and "True Story-Telling: How Historians Construct the Past," for high school sophomores. Each unit contains teacher explanations of the unit design, connections to concepts, skills, and standards, and directions for delivering the lessons and units, plus modification strategies and methods for assessment. There is no subject index. Purcell is a consultant on gifted and talented education to the Connecticut State Department of Education. Leppien is a classroom teacher and enrichment specialist.
