Katrien Pype, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, examines the production of Pentecostal television fiction in contemporary Kinshasa of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In particular she considers the production of Pentecostal ideology in the plots and the evangelical actors behind the production. In addition to interviews and observation, as an ethnography of the actors, Pype participated as an actress with an evangelical acting company. In ten chapters she explores the city and Christian beliefs, kinship networks, the distribution of divine authority and knowledge, Christian aesthetics, how television mediates the power of art and its Christian messages, the question of evil and personal morality, the relationship between witchcraft and Christianity, and gender and marriage. A final chapter emphasizes the historicity of the TV serials and addresses the role of the living room in the cultural public sphere. The material was gathered between 2003 and 2006.
