Pyrhönen (comparative literature, U. of Helsinki) reads Charlotte Brontë's 1847 classic Jane Eyre as an adaptation of the traditional 'Bluebird' fairytale in which each new wife is handed a key enticing her to discover her husband's murder of his previous wives. After setting the stage for how Brönte's heroine occupies households with their own version of Bluebeard, she examines how other novelists have interpreted this theme (e.g., Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, 1938; Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, 1979). Psychoanalytic motifs inform her textual analysis of the themes of forbidden sexuality, religion, sacrifice, and scapegoating. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
