This three-volume anthology presents previously published journal articles and book excerpts selected for their importance to international relations as a discipline. The history of international relations is generally viewed in terms of major debates on various assumptions, and this collection is structured accordingly, divided into sections on four various types of debate. After an extensive introduction, 25 selections represent substantive debates: realism vs. idealism; realism vs. pluralism vs. globalism; neorealism vs. neoliberalism; and global governance. The second volume contains 12 selections focused on epistemological debates (traditionalism vs. science; positivism vs. post-positivism) and 16 on ontological debates (agent-structure, rationalism vs. constructivism). The third volume, on normative debates, presents 33 selections on competing perspectives on international ethics (moral skepticism vs. communitarianism vs. cosmopolitanism); human rights; coercion, deterrence, and the use of force; poverty and distributive justice; and the global polity. Selections are from journals such as Philosophy and Public Affairs, Journal of International Affairs, and World Politics, among many other sources. The editors are affiliated as follows: Rainer Baumann and Peter Mayer (Universität Bremen, Germany) and Bernhard Zangl (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany). Papers are printed in facsimile. There is no index. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
