In this study, the author examines the role of English in postcolonial societies, as evidenced by Indian/South-Asian English, particularly in some local ways that it falls along the lines of a class-based divide. The text explores how language policies become social practices; how they are interpreted and resisted by teachers and institutions; how they connect to larger political ideologies; how they reinforce existing social stratifications of class, caste, ethnicity, and gender; and how issues of inequality, subordination, and unequal value are linked to the positioning of English in relation to vernacular languages.
