Authors Ravitch and Riggan (U. of Pennsylvania) define a conceptual framework as an argument about why the topic one wishes to study matters, and why the means proposed to study it are appropriate and rigorous. They show how conceptual frameworks can guide the ways we think about collecting, analyzing, describing, and interpreting data in empirical research. Introductory chapters describe the main elements of conceptual frameworks: theory, methodology, and the literature review. Subsequent chapters present journal articles by four individual researchers in education, which highlight the uses of conceptual frameworks for research design, data collection and fieldwork, data analysis, and for presenting, explaining, and contextualizing findings. In addition to the journal article, each chapter contains background on its author, an overview of the article's context, and a discussion of the article's argument and methods.
