Recent European legislation has been passed obliging member states to produce and provide harmonized estimates of international migration and asylum flows, yet guidelines and methodologies for providing such estimates have yet to be developed. Presented by Raymer (social sciences, U. of Southampton, UK) and Willekens (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, the Netherlands), the 16 chapters of this work address this problem by discussing issues, strategies, and methods for obtaining consistent estimates of international migration flows in the context of various data situations. They develop a classification of migration data types and models that are able to combine different data types to predict migration flows that are comparable across data types and that account for differences in data sources, reliability, and validity.
