Essayist, novelist, and poet Reed collects 15 of his essays written during and just after the presidential contest that brought Barack Obama to the White House (many of which first appeared on the leftist political website Counterpunch). The essays focus on continuing racism in this country, particularly as relevant to the presidential campaign and to Barack Obama specifically. Reed identifies and critiques the actions of "nigger breakers" in politics and the media. Unlike the professional "nigger breaker" who beat former slave and prominent abolitionist Frederick Douglass (as recalled in his autobiography), these new "nigger breakers" use more subtle means such as publicly humiliating prominent black people to send a message to blacks, explains Reed in his introduction. He addresses racist attacks on Obama during the campaign, but is also frequently critical of the President as well for such actions as his speech at the NAACP calling for more "responsibility" among black fathers.
