Unlike other works in the series, Reed's overview didn't have the benefit of a written historic trail to follow. Instead, it relies chiefly on archaeological data to document the lives and understanding of events of Puebloan leaders, ritual and craft specialists, and common people of 11th and 12th century Chaco Canyon in the US Southwest. Reed (Center for Desert Archaeology, Tucson, AZ) writes that he had to tread a fine line between history and archaeology in working to convey a sense of the magnificence of ancient Chaco and its place in the context of the medieval period. His text includes excerpts of historical documents related to the discovery, exploration, and excavation of Chaco Canyon by Euro-Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
