The academic study of what it means to be a man has lagged behind feminist investigations, but this is beginning to change. In this group of essays, ten scholars analyze how masculinity has been expressed and defined in French literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Reeser (French, University of Pittsburgh) and Seifert (French, Brown University) note that over the centuries the same concerns emerge. One is how men define themselves in the company of other men. Another, perhaps insoluble question is what masculinity is in terms of women. From the anonymous author of the Prose Lancelot to post-colonial writers such as Laye and Alleg, the need to define male as opposite to female, while somehow appropriating "feminine" strengths, is a constant theme. Some of the recent work examined shows a more fluid definition of masculinity but still within traditional socially constructed parameters. The editors state that they hope these essays will encourage further study, and certainly the issues raised should do just that. Distributed by Associated University Presses.
