Its heyday was fairly close to those of other lines, but in other ways the Key System was unique. It was an outright inducement for workers in the downtown San Francisco area to purchase homes in Berkeley, Oakland and Piedmont in an era in which there were no bridges upon which they could commute. The system of ferries and trains that substituted for them for a time, and the added inducement of attractive rolling stock and ornate piers, architecturally interesting bridge units for the trains, and even the attractions of the ferryboat fleet worked their way with early commuters. Enthusiasts and transportation historian Rice and Echeverria work their way through nearly 200 period photographs along with other documents, and their text is both informative and accessible. This will make any commuter in the Bay Area very, very jealous. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
