As healthcare costs continue to escalate in the US, there is an increasing shift in healthcare delivery towards a value-based system to obtain the maximum amount of health benefit at the least cost. Regarding spinal care, the value of specific procedures and interventions has not been widely discussed nor understood. In this text, 31 American university- and practice-based experts in spine care, outcomes measurement, healthcare policy, and healthcare quality improvement contribute 19 chapters introducing the concepts of value-based spinal care to spinal care providers. Topics addressed include defining and determining value in the context of spinal care, outcome measures and cost measures to use in the value equation, cost-effectiveness analysis and how it is performed, and assessing the value of new spine-related technologies. Sample, reproducible measurement tools and methods are included to help spinal care providers who are interested in beginning to measure value in their own practices.
