Rinner (German studies, U. of North Carolina-Greensboro) traces the emergence of a cultural memory of the 1960s German student movement, subsequent social movements, and terrorist groups in fiction published in Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the novels she finds layers of remembering and forgetting that reshape the reader's understanding of the 1960s with respect to the Cold War and to the legacy of the Third Reich. They also refute the notion that East Germany was isolated from the political upheaval during the late 1960s and early 1970s, she says. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
