Robertson recently retired from a liberal arts college in Ohio after teaching literacy for 34 years. Here she deals with the evidence of persistent low literacy levels in many individuals with hearing loss, and with evidence of higher literacy levels in those with hearing loss who have learned to listen. To a large extent, she has pulled together the dominant literacy research conducted in the "hearing world" and applied it to the situation of hearing loss.
