Zangwill was a British-born Jewish writer/activist whose play, The Melting Pot (1908), made popular the term to describe the assimilation of immigrants in the US. Rochelson (English, Florida International U.) traces his career as a writer of other influential works including the novel, Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People (1892), and his controversial advocacy of a Zionism which allowed for the possibility of a Jewish homeland somewhere other than Israel, Jewish assimilation, women's suffrage, and pacifism. The book includes a chronology of Zangwill's life (1864-1926) and that of his wife, Edith Ayrton Zangwill (1874-1945), also an author; photos; and art illustrations.
