This report from the World Bank considers how Brazil can improve its competitiveness in the global economy through creation of human capital and the fostering of innovation. It summarizes conclusions from previous World Bank policy papers on the macroeconomic fundamentals behind Brazil's stability and progress and describes research conducted from 2006 to 2007. It addresses issues that it trails similar countries in Asia, aims for elite rather than everyday innovations, and relies too much on government leadership instead of private sector innovation. It proposes innovation methods through the creation and commercialization of new knowledge and technology, adapting ideas from abroad, disseminating underused knowledge and technology already in the country, and improving education. The report is aimed at policy makers, academics and researchers, and businesspeople in and outside of Brazil. It is a result of collaboration between the World Bank and consultants in Brazil and other countries. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
