Rodríguez-Brown (curriculum and instruction, U. of Illinois at Chicago) describes Project FLAME, a family literacy program model meant to enhance literacy learning through parental involvement, which has been implemented with Latino families in Chicago since 1989, and recently nationwide. She views the home-school connection as a two-way street where both parents and teachers bridge the transition between settings. She discusses the role of parents in school achievement, the concept of family literacy, and outlines the FLAME model and how it was adapted for use with culturally and linguistically different families who have children between the ages of three and nine, as well as its effectiveness. She then suggests how teachers can contribute by incorporating out-of-school knowledge into the curriculum. The book is aimed at educators, community workers, and researchers.
