A dictionary offering biographical information about friends, disciples, ministers, philosophers, and others who either influenced the early Methodists or were actually involved with the movement, founded in 1729 by missionaries John Wesley (1703-1791) and, to some degree, by his brother Charles (1707-1788) in an effort to revitalize the spiritually impoverished Church of England. Biographical entries are arranged alphabetically by last name, followed by dates of birth and death, if known. Entries range from a couple of lines in length to lengthy biographical essays on more influential figures in the movement's history. Each entry lists further sources of information. Entries featured include Socrates, Robert Southey, Edmund Spenser, St. Katherine of Genoa, and many others. Small, ASCII-style font makes deciphering the text somewhat difficult.
