In Aramaic and Arabic versions dating as early as the eight century, The Legend tells how the Prophet Mohammad in his early years encountered a Christian Monk, and that encounter--variously described--greatly influenced the origin and nature of Islam. Roggema (history of the Islamic world, John Cabot U., Rome) provides text and translation of four early versions, and places the legend in the context of Christian apologetics in regard to emergent Islam. Her topics include Bahira's teachings, the Qur'an against Islam, and Jewish traditions about Bahira. This first full modern study of the popular legend and its recensions, should provide both historical theologians and church historians much to ponder for a long time. It is slightly revised from her 2007 Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Groningen. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
