Editors Karen L. Roos (Indiana U.) and Allan R. Tunkel (Monmouth Medical Center, New Jersey) state in the preface that although significant improvements have been made with regard to imaging and diagnostic techniques, there remain many challenges in diagnosis, administration of antimicrobial therapy, and management of complications--especially with increased numbers of immunocompromised patients. They state that "the successful approach to bacterial CNS infections is multidisciplinary and often includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, and specialists in infectious diseases." Four chapters discuss some generalities with regard to bacterial CNS infections, including characteristic neuroimaging appearance of specific infections (and the limitations of neuroimaging); cerebrospinal fluid analysis (including newer diagnostic tests); pathogenesis and pathophysiology; and principles of antimicrobial therapy. The other 12 chapters discuss the specifics of bacterial meningitis, brain abscess, rickettsial and ehrlichial infections, mycobacterial infections, neurological complications of bacterial endocarditis, and toxin mediated syndromes of the nervous system, among other topics.
