A core text in the establishment of the Chinese tradition of family reverence and responsibility is the "Xiaojing". Composed well over two thousand years ago, its tenets are incorporated into Chinese public and private life. Rosemont (religious studies, Brown University) and Ames (philosophy, University of Hawai'i) have translated the Xiaojing with the original Chinese above each section. Their introduction is actually a hundred-page explanation of the milieu of the original work and how it has become part of the Chinese world view. The authors also give a list of Chinese philosophical terms with clear explanations. This book would be excellent in an undergraduate class in philosophy, comparative religion or Chinese history.
