Harrowing, yes. Beautifully written, of course. Full of cultural references lost to many young adult readers, no doubt. Wiesel's Night is of great value to understanding the Holocaust of World War II but these days many first reading it have never been told there was a Holocaust. Worse, those teaching it may be too young to know more than what they saw in a recent feature film. This collection of articles gives those teaching Night a good first contact with background material and includes a list of all works cited for further research. Materials include historical and cultural contexts, including information specifically on ghettos and concentration camps, information on Holocaust memoirs, reviews of Wiesel's other work, literary contexts such as the original Yiddish text and comparisons with other works about the Holocaust. The section on courses and classroom strategies is particularly helpful and contains discussion questions and references to supporting media.
