Rosenberg (U. of Maryland-College Park) presents written versions of a lecture series he presented at a May 2009 mathematics conference of the same name in Fort Worth, Texas. He draws about equally from topology, operator algebras, and physics and a wee bit from algebraic geometry, but does not expect readers to be familiar with more than one of these, and so includes some basics on each. There are plenty of theorems and proofs, as in conventional mathematical books, but his main goal is to show how several seemingly disparate subjects are closely linked, and to provide an overview of the areas of current research. Passages that he has added to the lectures are marked, to alert readers that they are either advanced or tangential and not necessary to the main flow of the text.
