George Benston was a unique scholar whose research interests were as broad as those of any recent academician. While at Goizueta Business School of Emory University, George held the Miles B. Lane Chair in Finance, Economics, and Accounting. In terms of research productivity, he ranked among the elite in all three fields. This two-volume set contains 30 papers that were either authored or co-authored by George during his academic career, which began at the University of Chicago in 1965. George had over 100 papers published in professional journals and close to 50 in non-refereed publications. Needless to say, selecting 30 to best represent his scholarly interests was no small task, and a committee was formed to help in the selection process. This group included James Rosenfeld (Emory University), George Kaufman (Loyola University, Chicago), Larry Wall (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta), Robert Eisenbeis (Cumberland Advisors), RashadAbdel-Khalik (University of Illinois), and Gregory Waymire (Emory University). The papers, published between 1964 and 2008, provide the reader with a fairly complete representation of George's academic work. It is unfortunate not to know which future projects he would have pursued, but it is safe to say that the topics would have been timely, important, and extremely thought-provoking. It is an understatement to say that George will be greatly missed by the academic community and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.

James (Jim) Rosenfeld is Associate Professor of Finance, Goizueta Business School, Emory University. Prior to joining the Goizueta Business School faculty, Jim taught at the Terry Business School at the University of Georgia. He received his Ph.D. from New York University, his M.B.A. from Columbia University, and his B.S. from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. Jim's papers have been published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Accounting Review, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Financial Management, Journal of Financial Research, and Managerial and Decision Economics. Jim was not only a colleague of George at Emory, but a very close friend and mentor as well.
