This paperbound reprint of the 1978 work (Free Press) contains a new introduction by the author. Rotenberg (Hebrew U. of Jerusalem, Israel) argues that the Calvinist doctrine of predestination has a profound impact on who gets labeled as deviant in Protestant societies and that this negatively impacts the "people-changing" sciences (i.e. psychology, criminology, etc.). He further investigates the impact of "Protestant bias" on theories of alienation. He concludes by attempting to assess the socio-historical roots of the Protestant salvation ethic and promoting a more optimistic Hassidic salvation ethic as a more human paradigm.
