Trafficking in human beings for sexual/economic exploitation has been called a contemporary form of slavery. In this major contribution to the study of this "underside of globalization," a national reporter in Finland on this gender-based human rights issue introduces debates on the extent of the role of transnational organized crime and estimates of the magnitude of the problem, in the context of undocumented labor migration. Case studies show that macroeconomic policies and crises have gendered impacts. Anti-trafficking challenges include demand, victims' fear of deportation or reprisal, and the newness of national and international strategies for prevention, protection, and prosecution. The bibliography includes documents of the United Nations, the European Union, labor and other organizations; and international cases. Martinus Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill.
