Many settlers of Israel were secular Zionists or later immigrants for whom traditional Jewish roles and customs had lost their meaning. In seven essays written over 15 years, Rubin (emeritus, sociology and anthropology, Bar Ilan U., Israel) interprets ethnographic material using structural tools and symbolic analysis. "Personal definitional rites" is the term he coined in his studies of Israelis who created versions of ethnic civil religion, often appropriating sacred rituals in changing their identity. His subjects of analysis range from informal, collective mourning practices in the military and kibbutz, to personal transformation rituals of patients undergoing gastric reduction surgery.
