In this collection of eight partly reprinted essays from 1990-2008, Rubin (emeritus, sociology and anthropology, Bar Ilan U., Israel) applies the lenses of social change and concepts of time to Talmudic era rabbinic interpretations of the Bible and halakha (Jewish law) relating to Jewish rites of passage. Following an introductory discussion of his socio-cultural deductive rather than historical-philological methodology, he treats subjects including the symbolism of priestly clothing, circumcision, women's status in rites of birth and marriage, and the evolution of mourning practices as the family shifts from extended to nuclear in structure.
