In this interdisciplinary exposition of learning and memory science, Rudy (psychology & neuroscience, U. Colorado, Boulder) employs a down-then-up approach to characterizing the basis of memory. The phenomenon is first explained at the cellular level by discussing synapses, mechanisms of plasticity, and gene expression. The next part moves down to the molecular level with a detailed investigation of receptors such as AMPA and NMDA, specific mediating proteins, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators such as catecholamines and steroids. Finally the book moves up to brain anatomy and integrated physical systems, covering the hippocampus, cortico-striatal pathways, and auxiliary circuits. The various sections draw on both behavioral and biochemical experimental paradigms. In addition to references and subject index, a glossary and author index are provided.
