The family and the church have been the most important institutions in African American communities since slavery, and grandmothers have played a pivotal role in both. Ruiz (African American and African studies, U. of North Carolina, Charlotte) highlights the increase in grandparent caregivers over the past 30 years, with an emphasis on contemporary challenges for the grandmothers. After reviewing the historical roles of older African American women, the study presents quantitative findings about custodial grandmothers' physical and mental health and life satisfaction, as well as qualitative data, based on interviews, that address grandmothers' feelings about caregiving, family relationships, coping strategies, the support they receive from others, and their role in the family.
