This book for educators and school administrators outlines the impact of Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on the American educational system, explains specific provisions, and details the educational rights of individuals who are protected by these laws. While recommendations for practice are given, the book is not intended as a how-to manual. Rather, it is designed to make educators aware of the many requirements governing the law as it impacts the rights of people with disabilities in school settings. Early chapters review education and the American legal system, and overview antidiscrimination legislation. Later chapters focus on issues related to students, employees, parents, and the general public. A final chapter looks at courts' options for evaluating discrimination claims against public educational institutions, and describes defenses educational institutions may rely on. Appendices list Web sites in educational law, and Web sites of state departments of education and special education services. Chapter key concepts, chapter summaries, and FAQs are included. The book can serve as a concise desk reference for district-level administrators, classroom teachers, and resource specialists in special education and counseling. Russo is chair in education in the School of Education and Allied Professions and adjunct professor in the school of law at the University of Dayton, Ohio. Osborne is former principal of the Snug Harbor Community School, and now teaches law at American International College. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
