"Smart growth" research and research into adaptation to climate variability and change, although entailing similar concerns and drawing on complementary modeling tools have generally been carried out with little connection to each other. In this volume, Ruth (environmental policy, U. of Maryland) and his contributors try to bridge that gap and merge the research agendas in 16 papers organized into sections covering major themes; stakeholder involvement; modeling, indicator development, and decision support; and methods and cases. When addressing stakeholder involvement, papers discuss general needs and challenges and specific issues related to oil transportation infrastructure. Two chapters than examine a complex systems approach for sustainable cities and a spatially explicit simulation model for land use evolution and impact assessment. The final section contains contributions on urbanization effect on rainfall and drainage infrastructure performance, flood risk institutions and climate change in the Netherlands, regional energy demand and adaptations to climate change in the US state of Maryland, physical planning and urban heat island formation, climate change and infectious diseases, and heat related mortality in Metropolitan Boston.
