Regardless of the effects of mitigation strategies addressing global climate change it is also necessary to formulate adaptation strategies that respond to the risks and opportunities of climate change--risks and opportunities that will have a regional texture as anticipated impacts will vary by location. In this work, Ruth (engineering and public policy, U. of Maryland at College Park), Donaghy (urban and regional planning, U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and Kirshen (civil and environmental engineering, Tufts U.) present six research projects sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency on issues of climate change variability. The studies address a range of potential impacts, including effects of climate change on air quality, water quality, fisheries, urban infrastructure, public health, and wildfires, at different geographic scales from the regional level through the basin and watershed level to the urban level.
