Senior political adviser to the High Commissioner on National Minorities of The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Sabanadze challenges the widespread assumption that globalization and nationalism are diametrically opposite, and that the conflict between them defines contemporary political life. She argues that the forces of nationalism tend to develop pragmatic relations with globalization that serve political and security interests of a national community. This is possible, she says, because today's nationalism is neither cultural nor an exclusively defense and isolationist force.
