An art historian who knew many of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism, Sandler offers new insights into this once avant garde movement. Focusing on the period 1942-52, he treats these artists under the overlapping headings he used in his seminal work The Triumph of American Painting (1970): mythmaking (Rothko, Pollack, Newman, Gottleib, Baziotes); field painting (Still, Rothko, Hoffman); gesture painting; plus the new heading of "biomorphist" painting (Motherwell, Gorky, Hoffman, and de Kooning), giving consideration to the development and reception of their oeuvre. Well-illustrated with superb color plates and including frequent and extensive quotes by the artists, the volume is not indexed. It is published in association with the School of Visual Arts, New York. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
