Analyzing signals and solving inverse problems in science and engineering are rarely taught together, say Santamarina (Georgia Institute of Technology, US) and Fratta (U. of Wisconsin-Madison), but they are intimately connected in all real applications, and many mathematical techniques are common to both. Their introductory textbook emphasizes the clear and concise explanation of the essential concepts that underlie the most useful procedures engineers and scientists can implement to address their needs. Equations and algorithms are introduced in a conceptual manner, often following logical rather than formal mathematical derivation, in order to highlight the intuitive nature of procedures and the physical interpretation of all solutions. Solved and unsolved problems are provided for each chapter. The first edition was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1998; the present edition, which follows the format of the first but incorporates new information and corrections, is not identified as a second edition on the cover or title page.
