This is one of five books that together comprise a revised and expanded edition of Professional Voice: The Science and Art of Clinical Care, which was also edited by Sataloff (otolaryngology, Thomas Jefferson U. and Georgetown U.) in order to provide scientific and medical information of value to laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, voice teachers, and performers interested in the human voice. Following and introduction to the physics of sound and a discussion of music and the brain, six chapters discuss basic biological and medical information including the genetics and genomics of the voice, laryngeal embryology and vocal development, clinical anatomy and physiology of the voice, arytenoid movement, vocal fold injury and repair, and cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging of the vocal fold. A speculative chapter then explores possible applications for nutraceutical manipulation for voice health, followed by chapters discussing laryngeal function during phonation, vocal tract resonance, chaos in voice research, dynamical disorders of voice, and the voice and forensics.
