The rise of transnational corporations from emerging markets such as China or India poses threats, according to Sauvant (executive director, Columbia Program on International Investment, Columbia U.), consisting mostly of challenges for integrating newcomers smoothly into the international foreign direct investment market and the world economy, but also presents opportunities consisting mostly of the potential for outward foreign direct investment from emerging markets to strengthen the economic performance of their home countries, and the fact that emerging market transnationals represent a new source of capital, technology, skills, and access to markets for host countries to advance their own development. He presents 17 papers from an eponymous October 2006 conference examining these and related issues. Following overview papers, contributions explore the growth and pattern of outward foreign direct investment from developing countries and discuss challenges and benefits for host countries, home countries, and the international community.
