Fluidized bed combustion (FBC) is an advanced technique for fuel flexible, high efficiency and low emission power generation. In these systems, fuels are combusted as a fluidized bed suspended by jets of air with sorbents that remove harmful emissions such as NOx, SOx and CO2. The editor and contributors provide an introduction to fluidization science and technology, review the fundamentals of fluidized bed combustion and gasification and advances in these areas and finally, focus on emerging CO2 capture technologies.
Part one, an introductory section, reviews fluidization science and fluidized bed technologies and includes chapters on particle characterization and behavior, properties of stationary and circulating fluidized beds, heat and mass transfer and attrition in FB combustion and gasification systems. Part two expands on this introduction to explore the fundamentals of fluidized bed combustion and gasification, while the third and fourth sections highlight recent advances in a variety of fluidized bed combustion and gasification technologies and focus on emerging CO2 capture technologies. Finally, the conclusion explores other applications of fluidized bed technology.
