In a book that took flight from a doctoral dissertation that she defended in 1994 (at an unnamed institution), an animal-lover traces the social history of women and men who participated in birdkeeping in America since the Colonial era. Scee points out that, contrary to some theories by ecofeminists, she found more similarities than dissimilarities in gender in regard to this activity, which has also blurred the lines between classes and work and hobby. Illustrations feature period bird art, cages, rehabilitation, and advertisements. The selected bibliography includes manuscript collections, interviews, avian journals, and trade literature.
