The education system of the municipality of Reggio Emilia serves children aged three months to six years, drawing from the social context of the community and concentrating on the marginalized. Teachers stay with students for three years. Each school has specialists in music, dance, or design. The schools focus on what the children are able to do, and the teachers demonstrate deep respect for their charges. Scheinfeld (research, Erikson Institute) and his coauthors apply the lessons learned from the Reggio schools and Chicago Commons project to the US. They provide examples, dialogs, and questions and show how to apply Reggio methods to standards-based curriculum in literacy, math, and other school readiness components.
